Organizations are encouraged to categorize vendors into three distinct groups: basic, preferred, and strategic. Having other options for commodity items such as this is common, but the lesson to be learned here is that vendors are finite. Contingency plans should be part of your business continuity efforts and these efforts extended to the vendors and the products they offer. Don’t leave your organization and its success to the tides of a constantly changing vendor landscape.
