My organization has not been audited that I know of. However, many of my clients’ organizations have. Some paid hefty fines, others were able to negotiate because they had done their homework, conducted and internal audit, and had a collection of pre-audit reports together with initial goals for negotiation, and an internal agreement on what their acceptable bottom was.

I have been involved in several software audits with previous companies. I have found that auditors are people who want to do a job, and most of them are ethical. If you approach the audit as a learning and corrective experience, rather than a punitive and greed-based move by a publisher, and you have the opportunity to impart that perspective on the auditor, you can usually strike an understanding and influence the audit to move in the right direction. It is critical to be respectful of the auditor’s time, and they generally will be respectful of yours. If you find that they are not playing fairly, it is important to remind them of point number one above.

Yes, we have received audits from major software vendors. The process typically begins with a formal letter announcing the audit. After that, we discuss the scope, key dates, and the overall timeline with the vendor. Internally, we coordinate with our legal team to ensure our responses are accurate and compliant.

During the audit itself, I was part of the Quality Assurance (QA) team, responsible for validating that all responses contained only the necessary information—no more, no less. Our goal was to ensure transparency while protecting sensitive or irrelevant data. Once the audit concluded, we received the final results and reviewed them with the relevant stakeholders.
