The “is map” is the current situation in the organisation. It includes processes, procedures, guidelines, etc. The “should map” is the ideal/supposed situation depicting desired outcomes as per the processes, etc.

Is Map: The team we have assembled to put together an efficient ITAM program
Should Map: The processes that we need to put into place to achieve this.

Is map shows current state, whereas, should map shows things how they should be happening.

The Is Map should focus on the current state of our ITAM program and it should help identify the strengths and weaknesses so we can pinpoint areas that are in need of improvement.
The Should Map will focus on what the FUTURE ITAM program will be and will identify goals, and functional/efficient standard operating procedures.

The “Is Map” focuses on assessing the current state of ITAM, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
The “Should Map” provides a vision for the future state of ITAM, outlining the desired improvements, best practices, and goals to aim for.
