Whenever there is miscommunication, meet with all players to identify where the disconnect happened.

Often, during the start of new projects, we assume we will manage all as the previous one, but the true each new project owns its particular characteristics, so have to avoid the “seniority blindness” and ask for all the deliverables and control points to assure a successful outcome.

In South Africa we have a lot of different languages and dialects. English is not always everyone’s home language. Being Afrikaans myself, I used to use the wrong phrases, which misled my message. Your tone of voice can also influence your message, as well as body language. I worked on these issues and my messages are now clear and concise.

When asking a colleague for direction, I was given false information. When I completed the task, the manager came to me to discuss the error I had made. The manager explained the process and gave me correct direction so that this wouldn’t happen again in the future. I made sure to remember the steps that were given to me so that the same mistake was not made again.

I meet them at their level. What I mean by that is usually if there is any miscommunication there is a level of tension that goes along with it. So I do my best to clarify what I was communicating or receiving and ask for clarification that I am understanding them correctly to resolve any issues and move forward as a team.

Communication gaps occur during dialog of complex technical concepts and business partners, To handle potential miscommunications, one needs to communicate on a level of the user and socialize concepts that are easy to understand and relatable.

In a recent meeting with several managers about space and equipment, I noticed we were holing onto items that had no vale and posed no security risk. after 60 days, I suggested we dispose of them to free up space. Upon sharing my concerns in a follow up meeting, the team understood the need for disposal, and we successfully cleared the space we needed.

There were some miscommunications on some licensing compliance issues, along with the product support owners not taking any ownership and leaving it to me. I handled it by meeting with them, level-setting with a structured list of key steps, and got everyone on the same page.
