We include sustainability in the selection criteria when doing a procurement. We also ensure that we are maximising the use of the assets during its productive life. There are times that assets are redeployed in other non-critical areas if there is still serviceability left in it. We have recently contracted a disposal vendor for all the disposition of the organisation.
There are several things that we’re constantly keeping in mind as it comes to helping the environment when it comes to IT Assets. Everything from bulk ordering to be a bit more conservative on frequency of shipments, to the redeployment of assets that are still within our tech specs to prevent more devices from being ordered, to ensuring that our disposal partners adhere to a strict environmental impact study when physically destroying laptops or the recycling of parts is always considered.
My organization can help the environment when it comes to IT assets by only purchasing what is needed, not over-purchasing, and using the asset for it’s full useful life especially when it moves from one employee to another due to transfer/separation/reassignment/etc.. We can also re-deploy if possible. Also by following our disposal process properly.
