Is map is the map of what is currently happening. Should map is looking at what is needed to be done in the future.

This is no more than a current vs future state excercise, I do these for every customer for any processes that we together deem are in scope.

The “Is Map” focuses on assessing the current state of ITAM, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
The “Should Map” provides a vision for the future state of ITAM, outlining the desired improvements, best practices, and goals to strive for

The knowledge gained so far is summarized in the “Is Map,” which is the assessment of the
current environment. To document direction, the “Should Map” is the ultimate KPA
implementation that fulfills the goals for ITAM to the best achievable level. The “Should Map” is
not necessarily achievable in a single project or year. From this map, ideas for analysis, projects,
and opportunities are generated as progress is made. ITAM is a quest for the ultimate goal
achievement rather than a destination. Without a plan or in this case an effective map, it is hard
    to reach the desired goals.

Is map will show how assets are handled today from cradle to grave. The should map will show how the assets will be handled by implementing a proper IT Asset Management program.

    Is Map: Current State
Should Map: wishlist of things that should be happening

    Comparing two:
Is Map the current scenario, and should the map is forward-looking and actions based on desired outcomes

    Is Map:
ITAM Program is not followed to the dot; a number of gaps have been highlighted that can make it more functional
If truly we align the ITAM Program to IAITAM best practices, my organization will see considerable savings and value of the IT assets.

Should Map: Set up roles & responsibilities that will drive the ITAM Program
Strategically sell ITAM program to the Executives for their buy in
Identify and propose a cost saving initiative as a way of having Senior Management and Executive buy in the ITAM program.
Identify and highlight areas where we are non-compliant and have them well communicated to Senior Management & Executives

IS- Things happening now like monitoring equipment every now and then.
SHOULD- Things that need to happen like monitoring all equipment all the time.

Every organization will have a different version of their IS and SHOULD map depending on their maturity, complexity, and other factors. Having a foundation to describe the current state of an organization measured against industry-standard KPAs is a helpful exercise and prepares one to identify future growth and improvement areas in their “Should” map.

“Should Map” is the goal and “IS map” are the milestones in progress to achieve the goal.

Is Map: Alerting employees that their inactive mobile lines will disconnect if action isn’t taken.

Should Map: Created automated email notifications and timeline for notices (first notice goes out to zero use employees, 2nd reminder notice – 23 days later, 3rd notice – 7 days later, after 120-day mark – disconnect service)

    Comparing two:
Evaluating the problem in Is Map and taking steps to make sure company isn’t paying for mobile devices that aren’t needed for business in Should Map.
