I believe both are important; however, if forced to pick one, I’d say communication is probably more important. Through good communication, people have the natural ability to learn through what’s being said, described, demonstrated, shown, etc.
For me, Program Management will probably be the first KPA I’ll focus on. Program Management is all encompassing and because of the current state of our ITAM platform, program management can prove to be beneficial due to all the cross collaboration amongst several different teams that has to happen in order to establish a set of comprehensive processes and procedures.
Any policies that center around compliance. Being out of compliance runs the risk of a lot of downstream impact.
The Hybrid model that mostly every company has been adjusting to, has a a lot to do with what current communication methods are in place. Ultimately, video/Zoom calls have been at the forefront of most of the communications with messaging apps (i.e. Slack) being right up there sharing the space with Zoom.
A few of the most recent policies we’ve already created prior to us rolling out a formal ITAM program were: Data Retention Policies and Tech Refresh/Upgrade Policies.
Because we have such a lean crew, I’m currently responsible for the entire lifecycle of a device (cradle to the grave – procurement to decommission).
Ideally, we aim to have an entire Assets Team comprised of an Assets Manager who will have more strategic responsibilities as well as Asset Specialists who will have more tactical/operational responsibilities.
